Serendipity Books occupies the stately warehouse-like quarters at 1201 University Avenue (at Curtis Street) that formerly housed the Oak Barrel Winery, a seller of winemaking and beermaking supplies.

The North Berkeley station on BART's Richmond line is about six blocks from the store. We'll pick up customers who call us (841-7455) from the station.

Directions

From the north (Contra Costa and Solano counties and even more remote points), take Interstate 80 west to the University Avenue exit in Berkeley (it's one exit past Gilman Street; if you go to Ashby Avenue, you've gone an exit too far). Follow the ramp onto eastbound University (you'll be driving toward the Berkeley Hills). One block past the third stoplight (at Sixth Street, Ninth Street, and San Pablo Avenue), Serendipity will be on your left at the northeast corner of Curtis and University (just across the street from the Foster Freeze); turn left at Curtis Street and park, or you may continue around the block (right on Hearst, right on Chestnut, right on University) to use our modestly capacious parking lot.

From the west (San Francisco and the Peninsula beyond), take U.S. 101 or Interstate 280 to the Bay Bridge. On the eastern side of the bridge, bear left at the Interstate 80 east/Sacramennto exit. Take the University Avenue exit off of I-80 (the third after the bridge -- the first two are Powell Street and Ashby Avenue; if you reach Gilman Street, you've gone an exit too far). Proceed east on University Avenue as above.

From the south (southern Alameda County and the San Jose region), take Interstate 880, the Nimitz Freeway, north to Interstate 980 through downtown Oakland. Following the downtown exits, get in one of the two righthand lanes to take westbound Interstate 580. On I-580, take the Interstate 80 east/Sacramento exit. Take the University Avenue exit off of I-80 (the third after the bridge -- the first two are Powell Street and Ashby Avenue; if you reach Gilman Street, you've gone an exit too far). Proceed east on University Avenue as above.

From the east (Orinda, Lafayette and other trans-hill regions), take Highway 24 through the Caldecott Tunnel. Take the second exit -- Tunnel Road/Highway 13 north, to Berkeley. Follow Tunnel past where it becomes Ashby Avenue (near the Claremont Hotel), and stay on Ashby all the way to Sacramento Street (the eleventh light, approximately 2.2 miles, past the hotel; the major thoroughfares you'll cross are Claremont Boulevard, College Avenue, Telegraph Avenue, Shattuck Avenue, Adeline Street, and Martin Luther King Jr. Way). Turn right (north) on Sacramento to University (about 1.25 miles; University is the fourth light.) Turn left on University. Serendipity is on the right one block past the second light (Bonar Street).
