David O. Selznick's last film. Released in 1957 by Twentieth Century-Fox. The film was produced by Selznick, directed by Charles Vidor, and starred Rock Hudson, Vittorio De Sica, and Jennifer Jones, Selznick's wife. The film was pet project of Selznick and his first in years. He approached Ben Hecht to turn Hemingway's novel into a filmable screenplay in 1956. Together they work on the script, at first remainly completely faithful to the text. This proving unsuccessful Hecht and Selznick tried to capture what Heminway said in a more suitable way for the screen. Lydia Schiller soon joined the writers and work continued on the script while Selznick searched for a director. John Huston was the first and only choice as many notable directors would no longer work with Selznick. Director and producer were at odds as to the method of production. Disagreements continued until days before shooting began when Selznick sent a note to Huston essentially requesting his resignation. Huston walked from the project and Selznick replaced him with a temporary director until Charles Vidor was signed onto the project. The film was completed and previewed in Burlingame, California on November 18, 1957 and the next night at the Fox Theatre in San Francisco. After it's release it did very well for the first six months. It faded quickly from prominence at the box office thereafter and was not critically acclaimed. Selznick took note of the response to his final picture. He accepted that he had become out of touch with his audience, and retired from the film industry. $5000.00
